A Class A CDL training prepares students to land entry-level jobs as commercial truck drivers who will be able to drive over-the-road (OTR), regional, or local. A Class B CDL allows you to drive a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of more than 26,000 pounds such as a tow truck, dump truck, delivery truck, or a utility truck.
The Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) Mandate has recently been put in effect by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) to create a standardized truck driving curriculum. By enforcing this curriculum in schools, they will train safer drivers. It requires an appropriate balance of classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel education for students. For people who are looking to obtain a CDL, it's important that they attend a driving school which is ELDT certified, or else they will be ineligible to take the CDL test at the DMV.
If you have obtained your CDL before February 7, 2022, this mandate does not impact that standing. The same applies to people who earned any sort of CDL endorsement (such as passenger, bus driver, or hazardous materials) before this date. Additionally, if you got your CLP prior to this date and renewed it or got your CDL before the CLP expired, this mandate will not affect you.
